Matt Berry has shared a snippet of his new song, Aboard, ahead of the release of his latest album, Blue Elephant.

The album, which is released on Acid Jazz, will be available from 14 May and marks Berry’s 10th year with the label.

You can hear the new track below.

On Aboard, Berry once again shows his skill for crafting beautiful songs and soundscapes with folk and classic rock elements, creating a record that is “a dizzying trip through an idiosyncratically British love of psych, freakbeat, acid rock and late 60s pop”, according to a press release for the new album.

The press release also revealed: “Recorded during the summer of 2020, Blue Elephant is testament to Matt’s exceptional musicianship, production skills and songwriting prowess with every instrument played by Matt including, guitars, bass, a variety of keyboards and synthesizers (piano, Wurlitzer, mellotron, Moog, Hammond, Vox and Farfisa organs), with the exception of drums – supplied by Craig Blundell, on arguably his best album to date.” Craig Blundell, who has worked with Steven Wilson and Steve Hackett, worked with Berry on his previous album too.

Berry’s last album, Phantom Birds was issued in September 2020 to critical acclaim. It was his eight studio record and was inspired by a fascination with Bob Dylan’s John Wesley Harding and the way the album was recorded with the minimum of musicians to draw attention to the songs.

In 2018 he released the album Television Themes reworking classic themes from shows from the 60s, 70s and 80s including Are You Being Served?, The Good Life and Top Of The Pops alongside his band, The Maypoles.

Alongside his music, Matt Berry is perhaps best known as a BAFTA award-winning actor, appearing in comedies including Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, The IT Crowd, Toast Of London, and Year Of The Monkey.
