His comments after Talking Heads announced that they will reunite for the first time since the early 90s. The band will take part an on stage Q&A session as part of the Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September. to mark the upcoming 40th anniversary of the group’s classic concert film Stop Making Sense.
“As a younger person, I was not as pleasant to be around. When I was working on some Talking Heads shows, I was more of a little tyrant,” he told People magazine in an interview published Thursday. “And then I learned to relax, and I also learned that collaborating with people, both sides get more if there’s a good relationship instead of me telling everybody what to do I think [the end] wasn’t handled well. It was kind of ugly.”
Byrne continued, “I have regrets on how that was handled. I don’t think I did it in the best way, but I think it was kind of inevitable that would happen anyway. We have a cordial relationship now. We’re sort of in touch, but we don’t hang out together.”
The remastered Stop Making Sense is in cinemas everywhere from 29 September and Byrne is looking forward to seeing how audiences react, “My voice is still in good shape, but there’s one backwards jump that I do, and I go, ‘How in the world did you do that?’” he said. “[But] I’m curious. I’m hopeful that a wider, kind of younger audience will get to see this and see what we’ve done. I’m optimistic that it’s going to reach a different audience that wasn’t aware of a lot of this stuff.”
Meanwhile, the deluxe version of the Stop Making Sense soundtrack, which includes the complete concert for the first time is out now.
Stop Making Sense (Deluxe Edition) will be available as a limited edition, 2LP set and digitally along with a Dolby Atmos mix of the complete concert, mixed by Jerry Harrison and E.T. Thorngren, who also mixed the original release.
