The song has never made it to the top of the UK charts. While it remains to be seen whether that’ll change this year, Spider Stacy of the band recently told NME that he wasn’t bothered. “It doesn’t need it. Fairytale Of New York not being Number One is a bit like how neither [acclaimed footballers] Johan Cruyff nor George Best won a World Cup!”

The festive favourite is one of a number of seasonal hits beginning to make the yearly ascent up the charts. Wham!’s Last Christmas is currently at No 8, while Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You is No 10. They’re joined in the Tp 40 by Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (20), Ariana Grande’s Santa Tell Me (27), Bobby Helms’ Jingle Bell Rock (30), Ed Sheeran & Elton John’s former chart-topper Merry Christmas (31), Kelly Clarkson’s Underneath The Tree (32), Andy Williams’ It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (39) and Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone (40).

The Pogues recently announced a 2025 tour of the UK to celebrate 40 years of their second album, Rum Sodomy & The Lash.

The tour is the group’s first since their 2014 split, and their first since the death of vocalist and lyricist Shane MacGowan in 2023. The seven shows will take place across May 2025, with dates scheduled for Leeds, Birmingham, London, Glasgow, Manchester, and Newcastle. Tickets for the shows are on sale now.

Last month, a special 40th anniversary edition of debut album Red Roses For Me was released on two formats – recycled red vinyl containing the 2013 remix of the album and a double-CD set, including the album and B-sides and a bonus disc of the band’s BBC sessions from 1984.

The Pogues 2025 UK and Ireland tour dates:

May
1 – Leeds, O2 Academy
2 – Birmingham, O2 Academy
3 – London, O2 Academy Brixton
6 – Glasgow, Barrowland
7 – Manchester, O2 Apollo
8 – Newcastle, O2 City Hall
