Brits 2021: Taylor Swift First Female Winner Of Global Icon Award
Brits 2021: Taylor Swift is to become the first female winner of the Global Icon award at The BRIT Awards 2021, to be held on Tuesday 10 May at the O2 Arena, London.
According to a post on the official BRIT Awards site, “The BRITs Icon is the highest accolade given and is reserved for truly exceptional artists.” And not only is Swift the first female artist to receive the honour, she’s the first non-British recipient – the three previous winners were Elton John, Robbie Williams and David Bowie. In an announcement the Brits said: “Taylor’s career is unparalleled and her music and influence has resonated with millions of people all over the world. She’s used her platform to highlight many issues globally and recently has been applauded for her work promoting acceptance of the LGBTQ community.”
It’s the latest accolade in what has been a hugely successful year for the singer. Back in July 2020, she surprise released her eight album, Folklore, recorded in isolation with The National’s Aaron Dessner and songwriter and producer, Jack Antonoff. The album was a huge hit, topping charts worldwide and becoming the highest selling album in the US in 2020. It was swiftly followed by Evermore, released December 2020 and featuring the same collaborators. At the 2020 American Music Awards, Swift took home three awards, including the prestigious Artist Of The Year, while Folklore won Album Of The Year at the 2021 Grammy Awards, the third time in a row she’s received the prize. Meanwhile, last month Swift scored her seventh UK No 1 album with Fearless (Taylor’s Version), her third chart-topping album in the space of just 259 days.
