Before she introduced Sheeran, Cabello paid tribute to victims of the Ukraine war. “We’re all praying tonight for the peace and the safety of the people in the Ukraine. Thank you guys so much for being part of this important fundraiser,” she said.
“I’ve got a surprise for you guys tonight. This is me and this person’s first time singing this song together. Everybody give it up for Ed Sheeran.”
Cabello also performed a cover version of Coldplay’s Fix You, while Sheeran played Perfect and Bad Habits solo. Sheeran had to abandon his first attempt at Bad Habits when he realised that he was playing the wrong guitar, once he’d picked up the correct guitar the star quipped, “Live television, eh?”
Elsewhere, there were performances from Ukraine Eurovision winner Jamala, Anne Marie, Gregory porter and Becky Hill. Snow Patrol opened the show by playing their massive hit, Run. Manic Street Preachers were responsible for one of the night’s most thought-provoking moments with their performance of their 1998 No 1 single, If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next. And Nile Rodgers and Chic closed proceedings in celebratory fashion.
The event was organised in three weeks by Guy Freeman from Livewire Pictures, who told BBC Breakfast on Tuesday that the artists and others from the music and TV industries had not hesitated to donate their time. “Everybody was just so affected by those daily pictures of refugees, displaced people, leaving everything behind, and us all feeling helpless,” he said.
“And so this is what I guess we, in the live events and TV industry, can do – something like this, to try and help.”
