Barbie Release Second David Bowie Tribute Doll
Barbie fans and David Bowie collectors will be pleased to know that the timeless toy brand has paid tribute to the music great again. A statement from Mattel reads, “David Bowie was a one-man cultural phenomenon for his contributions to music, art, fashion, and film. Our second tribute doll celebrates the 50th anniversary of his classic Hunky Dory, the iconic Life on Mars? video, and an outfit forever associated with this ultimate pop chameleon.” Fans can buy the new doll here.
The US toy manufacturer first paid homage to Bowie in 2019 with a doll celebrating the 50th anniversary of the singer’s first hit, Space Oddity.
Toymakers Mattel have announced a second collectable doll in their @Barbie as Bowie range, where Barbie’s look is based on Bowie’s appearance in @TheRealMickRock directed Life On Mars? video. It’s available to purchase now: https://t.co/T1OofJG2v2 #Barbie #BarbieAsBowie pic.twitter.com/g6CUPsvrpi

Designer Linda Kyaw-Merschon said, “It’s a tribute to Bowie – his outfit, his makeup, his features – to emulate his essence and make sure it looked like Barbie, but as Bowie.”
The Mattel website reads, “Barbie introduces a second collectible doll honouring the ultimate pop chameleon, David Bowie, who continues to be recognized as a cultural vanguard. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of his album, Hunky Dory, this Barbie doll wears an authentic replica of the bespoke powder-blue suit Bowie wore in the Life on Mars? music video, complete with a foil-printed pin-stripe shirt, statement tie, and platform shoes. Her bold blue eyeshadow and a hairstyle inspired by Bowie’s 70s glam era bring this look to life.”
This autumn, Todd Rundgren, King Crimson’s Adrian Belew, and several other musicians will hit the road for the 2022 leg of their Celebrating David Bowie tribute tour. Also this year, director Brett Morgen will release Moonage Daydream, the first Bowie doc to receive a blessing from his family.
