The singer revealed the conversations she had with her record label, Atlantic, before releasing brat. “I was like, ‘I’m going to make a record that you guys think has no commercial hits on it. Or big songs. Or radio songs. Or streaming songs or whatever,’” she recalls. “‘But you need to realize that that doesn’t fucking matter. We don’t live in that world anymore, and I’m not that artist.’
“I’ve never seen my music as particularly niche,” she went on. “There’s plenty of room for the avant-garde on a commercial level in pop music.”
Charli went on to confirm that the themes of brat mirror her private life. “I’m partying all the time,” she said. “Everyone is always like, ‘Charli, now maybe is the time to leave it alone?’ I’m like, ‘Why?’ I’m messy. I’m messy. I’m also really not the girl who leaves at a chic hour.”
Elsewhere in the interview she discussed the political impact of her endorsing US presidential candidate Kamala Harris on her socials. “I’m not Bob Dylan, and I’ve never pretended to be… My music is not political. Everything I do in my life feeds back into my art. Everything I say, wear, think, enjoy — it all funnels back into my art. Politics doesn’t feed my art.”
Going on to discuss work in the pipeline, Charli revealed that she has been in the studio with Danielle Haim and Bon Iver while suggesting that there may be a “full-length other project” in the pipeline, though she did not confirm that it is a remix album. “But it’s definitely in the bratosphere, so to speak.”
