Coldplay are the most played British group of the 21st century in the UK, according to a report by music licensors PPL.

The band – Chris Martin, Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland and Will Champion – have racked up 400,000,000 seconds – or 13 years – of airplay so far this century. Their most played song is their 2008 No 1 single, Viva La Vida.

PPL licenses the use of recorded music on radio, TV and in public places such as shops, bars, restaurants, gyms, offices and warehouses in the UK and receives extensive airplay reporting from these broadcasters and public performance venues.

PPL’s CEO Peter Leathem OBE said: “This country has produced some of the most iconic and successful bands of all time, so documenting them is a perfect way to mark this year’s National Album Day. Including groups from across the last 60 years, this list is a reminder of the strength and depth of British music through the decades. Coldplay are fitting owners of the No.1 spot – few artists can claim to have had such a presence on UK radio and TV since 2000.”

The news comes the week before Coldplay release their new album, Moon Music. The album will feature the recent singles We Pray and feelslikeimfallinginlove. Each vinyl copy of the album – produced by Max Martin – will be made out of nine recycled PET-plastic bottles that have been recovered from waste, which will prevent the manufacture of more than 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic, and provide an 85% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional 140g vinyl.

Likewise, CD editions of the record will be the first in the world to be released on ‘EcoCD’, created from 90% recycled polycarbonate, sourced from post-consumer waste streams.

There will also be a limited ‘Notebook Edition’ of the record, which comes as a casebound hardback book, a replica of Chris Martin’s original studio notebook. It will contain 28 pages of notes, lyrics and illustrations from the album’s creative process.

The band are also in the news for selling out a record-breaking 10 nights at London’s Wembley Stadium and two nights at Hull’s Craven Park. See dates below.
