David Byrne & Fatboy Slim’s ‘Here Lies Love’ Musical Receives Tony Award Nominations
David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s 2012 musical Here Lies Love was one of several titles receiving multiple nods at The 77th annual Tony Award nominations.
Illinoise, the recently-mounted musical adaptation of Sufjan Stevens’ 2005 concept album Illinois, received four nominations, including Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, and Best Lighting Design. The production is currently playing at the St. James Theatre in New York through to 10 August.
The recent Broadway staging of former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and Fatboy Slim’s 2012 Here Lies Love also received four nominations, including Best Original Score, Best Sound Design, Best Scenic Design, and Best Choreography.
Hell’s Kitchen, the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys, tied for the most total nominations with 13, including Best Musical and Best Direction. Stereophonic, a new play by David Adjmi that follows a Fleetwood Mac-esque band in the ’70s struggling to write music together due to their interpersonal conflicts, also received 13 nominations, with Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire, earning consideration for Best Original Score.
Jamestown Revival earned a nomination for Best Original Score for their work on Adam Rapp and Justin Levine’s adaptation of The Outsiders, which received 12 nominations total. The newly remounted production of The Who’s Tommy didn’t receive the same amount of love in terms of total nominations, but the rock opera is up for Best Revival of a Musical.
In the acting categories, Eddie Redmayne received a nomination for his work in the new Cabaret revival, Jeremy Strong earned a nod for his performance in the Ibsen classic An Enemy of the People, and all three actors headlining the new revival of Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along (Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe) were nominated. Jessica Lange, Jim Parsons, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Sarah Paulson also received nominations this year.
The 77th Tony Awards will be hosted once again by Ariana DeBose and will air on CBS on Sunday, 16 June 2024 at 8:00 p.m. EST.
