‘You’re Christmas To Me’: The Underdog Story Behind Sam Ryder’s Festive Song

Bringing pure festive joy back into the pop charts, You’re Christmas To Me saw Sam Ryder challenge the supremacy of pop music’s titans.

Back

Taking us on a retro-pop journey through a golden era of festive wonderment, You’re Christmas To Me bears all the hallmarks of a modern holiday classic. Having already become a household name thanks to his stellar performance representing the UK in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest, the flaxen-haired TikTok personality Sam Ryder initially wrote the song as a fun homage to all his festive favourites. Little did he realise, however, that the song would ignite an unforgettable chart battle that will go down in modern pop history.

Here is the story of You’re Christmas To Me, and how Sam Ryder unexpectedly found himself in a festive face-off with Wham! and Mariah Carey.

The backstory: “I wrote the song on the train with minutes to spare”

Just a year after Sam Ryder finished as the runner-up in the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest with his hit song Space Man, the Essex-born singer was approached to write and record a new Christmas song for the soundtrack of the Amazon Original film Your Christmas Or Mine 2. Thrilled at the request, he seized the opportunity with both hands.

However, writing a festive bop in the summer wasn’t easy. Leaving it to the 11th hour, Ryder finally found inspiration during a railway commute. “I wrote the song on the train with minutes to spare before the deadline,” he later recalled, “and I needed to hand in my homework that evening!”

His relaxed approach may have come from underestimating just how many people his Christmas song would reach. “You never know who is going to hear that, only really the audience watching the film, so you kind of make it with no pressure at all,” Ryder said.

Throughout the whole process, Ryder’s only goal was to focus on writing a song he was truly passionate about – “Just for love and just for fun,” as he put it. Without the weight of commercial expectations or musical trends to consider, Ryder tapped into his enthusiasm for classic Christmas pop, crafting a loving throwback to all the festive songs he grew up enjoying.

The recording: “It’s very much in that ‘Home Alone 2’ era of Christmas songs”

When the time came to record You’re Christmas To Me, Ryder enlisted the production talents of The Nocturns, and settled in to Beatles producer George Martin’s fabled AIR Studios, in North London. Working together with co-songwriters Max Wolfgang and Tom Howe, Ryder and his team gleefully embellished the track with extravagant production touches as if throwing boxes of tinsel over a Christmas tree.

As a vivacious, horn-toting homage to the classic holiday pop of the Brill Building era, You’re Christmas To Me was a sonic bundle of pure joy. Deploying his soaring vocals, Ryder rode the song’s upbeat groove as if straddling a flying reindeer, channelling the swagger of All Alone On Christmas, by Darlene Love (whom Ryder later called “the Queen Of Christmas”).

“It’s very much in that Home Alone 2 era of Christmas songs,” Ryder said of You’re Christmas To Me, in an interview with The Official Charts Company. “Late 80s, early 90s Tina Turner-sounding saxophones, big New York swing drums.” Matching their vintage gift-wrapping, the song’s lyrics were loaded with festive tropes deployed by Ryder with all the enthusiasm of a town crier with a falsetto (“You’re the star upon the tree/You’re the only gift I need”).

Inspired by the late Clarence Clemons, of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, You’re Christmas To Me’s horn arrangements added a sophistication that perfectly matched Ryder’s note-perfect vocals. Best of all, to put the cherry on the figgy pudding, a Darkness-style guitar solo was added to give the song a pop-rock edge. Truly in his element, Ryder ensured that his Christmas offering would be an antidote to the more melancholy strain of holiday music. “I’m fed up of sad pop Christmas,” he proclaimed. “We’re getting big, bombastic-runaway-flaming-sleigh Christmas back, and that’s what we did.”

The release: “Imagine blasting through the sky on a runaway sleigh…”

Released on 7 November 2023, You’re Christmas To Me was warmly received by music fans and blazed a trail brighter than Rudolph’s red nose. “Imagine blasting through the sky on a runaway sleigh, with a skin full of mulled wine next to the big red guy,” Ryder enthused. “That’s my Christmas song.”

Since You’re Christmas To Me was initially only available exclusively on Amazon Music, Ryder wasn’t sure how well the song would perform on the charts. He needn’t have worried. Listeners were thrilled with it, and You’re Christmas To Me quickly began its steady ascent into the UK Top 10.

In response, Ryder hit the road, spending most of early December on an intense publicity run. “We’re in the battle for Christmas No.1,” he later said, “which is really strange because none of us expected it.” From making impromptu appearances at shopping centres to gracing the sofas of multiple chat shows, Ryder ended up playing around 26 live shows in a single week. “There’s six of us in a transit van just going all over the UK to make this dream happen,” he told This Morning.

After racking up over 200,000 units in sales and streaming figures, You’re Christmas To Me finished ahead of Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas, but was narrowly beaten to the No.1 spot by Wham!’s Last Christmas. Just like at Eurovision, Ryder’s affable nature won out as he gracefully accepted the runner-up spot. “Big up the whole Wham! team!” he said in a TikTok video. “Just absolutely unstoppable force, and rightly so. They are icons, they are legends!”

The legacy: A modern Christmas classic

Without a doubt, You’re Christmas To Me deserves to remembered as one of modern pop’s true underdogs. Since it was initially limited to streaming exclusively on Amazon Music, there’s no secret it faced an uphill battle on its path to chart glory. And yet, finishing at No.2 in the UK, the song proved that it could leap over those hurdles as effortlessly as Santa’s sleigh soaring over the rooftops.

Fully deserving of its status as a modern Christmas classic, You’re Christmas To Me has since been made available to stream across all music platforms. Continuing to resonate with fans, there’s a real possibility that it could find itself in a chart battle every Christmas – perhaps even going all the way to the top.
