Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin were the recipients of the Library of Congress 2024 Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. The ceremony took place last month at DAR Revolution Hall in Washington DC and aired on the US TV channel PBS on Monday night.
Mitchell – who was honoured with the award last year – took the stage song alongside a backing band comprised of Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox, Blake Mills, and Davey Johnstone.
Other performers at the event included Metallica, Maren Morris, Jacob Lusk, Charlie Puth, Brandi Carlile and Annie Lennox.
“I’ve been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that that one day this might be bestowed upon us,” John said of the Gershwin Prize. “It’s an incredible honor for two British guys to be recognized like this. I’m so honored.”
Taupin added, “To be in a house along with the great American songwriters, to even be in the same avenue is humbling, and I am absolutely thrilled to accept.”
Mitchell will perform two consecutive shows at the Hollywood Bowl on the 19 and 20 October. The performances will feature Brandi Carlile and her Joni Jam band. A previous Joni Jam show at Washington’s Gorge Amphitheatre featured Annie Lennox, Sarah McLachlan, Marcus Mumford, Wynonna Judd, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, Lucius and more. The shows will be Mitchell’s first Los Angeles headlining performances for over 24 years and follows her recent step back into the limelight, most notably with a performance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival, which was recorded for the album Newport Live.
