Though Kate Bush was not present at the ceremony in Brooklyn, she was honoured by former Outkast rapper Big Boi, who delivered a speech celebrating her. A video package featured tributes from Elton John, St Vincent, David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel, and Chvrches singer Lauren Mayberry.
Bush was announced as a member of the Rock Hall Class of 2023 in May, along with George Michael, Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against the Machine, and the Spinners. “I have to admit I’m completely shocked at the news of being inducted into the Hall of Fame! It’s something I just never thought would happen,” Bush said in a statement after the news became public. St Vincent also performed a version of Bush’s hit Running Up That Hill.
Meanwhile, Tom Morello accepting the award on Rage Against The Machine’s behalf. His bandmates, Zack de la Rocha, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk did not attend the ceremony. Morello ended his speech in typically fiery fashion: “So tomorrow, crank up some Rage and head out and confront injustice. Wherever it rears its ugly head, it’s time to change the world, brothers and sisters, or at a bare minimum to stir up a shit load of trouble. And finally, special thanks to my mom, Mary Morello, a retired public high school teacher, a proud Rage Against the Machine fan and a lifelong radical who turned 100 years old a couple of weeks ago. She’s watching at home tonight, but she asked me to tell you this: History, like music is not something that happens. It’s something you make. Thank you very much.”
