Kylie’s 16th studio album, featuring her recent Top 10 single Padam Padam and the title track Tension, earned 53,000 chart sales in its first week, outselling the rest of the Top 5 combined to reach the top of charts.
Tension now joins 1988 debut Kylie, 1989’s Enjoy Yourself, 1992 collection Greatest Hits, 2001 record Fever, 2010’s Aphrodite, 2018 release Golden, 2019’s Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection and 2020 LP DISCO in Kylie’s tally of UK chart-toppers.
Tension also tops this week’s Official Vinyl Album Chart, and claims the Number 1 spot on the Official Record Store Chart as the most purchased album in the UK’s independent record shops this week.
Interviewed on the BBC one chat show The Graham Norton Show, in an episode airing last night (29 September), Kylie opened up, saying: “I am asked a lot these days about what I would say to my younger self.
“I get quite emotional when I think about letting her know that she is not alone and what she is thinking is OK because it’s not all water off a duck’s back. I did sometimes end up in dark places, but I turned to my family.
“I don’t know how different it would be if it was today with social media – it is very hard to shut yourself off from voices, critics and your own thoughts.”
Going on to talk about the success of her new material, she said: “It is so invigorating, and I am thrilled. It is such an exciting time, it’s a kind of a pinch-me moment. I am loving it.”
