Liam Gallagher has earned PETA’s prestigious Strike the Right Chord for Animals Award for adopting a homeless dog called Buttons.

The Oasis star contacted the Happy Doggo sanctuary in Thailand last year when he learned about the puppy, who had been abandoned in the jungle for “not being cute enough” by its former family.

Gallagher received a heartfelt letter of thanks and a framed certificate from the charity. PETA wrote, “Liam’s compassionate move comes at a time when animal shelters across the UK and elsewhere are reporting spiking numbers of animal abandonment cases.

“By opening his heart and home to a dog desperately in need of a loving family, Liam has set a wonderful example for his legions of fans unlike other out-of-touch celebrities who purchase ‘pedigree’ breeds.”

Gallagher responded, “Rescuing Buttons has been the best decision we’ve ever made. She brings so much happiness to our lives and everyone she meets. We’re so lucky to have her; we’re obsessed. I thoroughly recommend adopting a homeless dog.”

When interviewed by Sky News around the time of the adoption, Happy Doggo’s Neil Harbison revealed that he thought he was the victim of a prank when he first received Gallagher’s application. “The name on the form was Liam Gallagher, but I thought that’s obviously not him,” he said. “Then the next line was occupation, and it was ‘singer’. I thought my mates were taking the piss. But I checked it out a bit more and his details all stacked up.

“I did interviews with him and his lovely [partner],” he said. “They have cats and they just really wanted a dog. They’ve been following me on social media and wanted Buttons.”

Buttons made the journey all around the world to join Gallagher, who has since said he’d rather stay at home with her than go on tour – he then helped to raise £25,000 to help other dogs in Thailand.
