The MTV VMAs 2022 were held on Sunday night (28 August) in front of a live audience at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center.

Among the performers at the 2022 show were co-hosts Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow, Lizzo, Anitta, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Panic! At The Disco and many more.

Jack Harlow won four awards, three of which he shared with Lil Nas X. The two stars won best collaboration for Industry Baby, a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. Surprisingly, this marks the first time that an all-male collaboration has won in this category, which was introduced in 2007. Industry Baby also won for best art direction and best visual effects. Harlow also took the award for song of summer for First Class, also a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100.

In addition to winning the Global Icon Award, Red Hot Chili Peppers won best rock for the first time for Black Summer. They beat, among others, Foo Fighters, last year’s winner of the Global Icon Award.

The Peppers’ awards bring their career tally of VMAs to 10. That puts them in a tie with Aerosmith and BTS for third place among groups. R.E.M. leads all groups with 12 awards, followed by Green Day with 11.

Meanwhile, Lizzo took home her first MTV VMA award as About Damn Time won in the Video For Good category. After gracing the stage with her hits About Damn Time and 2 Be Loved (Am I Ready), Lizzo called out her critics in her victory speech.

Anitta became the The first-ever Brazilian VMAs winner and performed her Best Latin-winning song Envolver from her 2022 album Versions of Me.

There was also a performance from Panic! At The Disco, who delivered a stylish take on Don’t Let the Light Go Out, the single from their new album Viva Las Vengeance.
