On The Beach was Young’s fifth studio album, recorded from November 1973 to April ’74 with a stellar range of musicians, including Crazy Horse’s rhythm section Billy Talbot (bass) and Ralph Molina (drums), along with other key players Ben Keith, Tim Drummond, Levon Helm (The Band), Rick Danko (The Band), Rusty Kershaw, David Crosby, Graham Nash and George Whitsell (The Rockets).

Neil Young wrote the following about the album on his Archives website: “On The Beach had one of my favorite covers by Gary Burden. We had a wonderful day gathering and assembling all the things in the image, before we put them on Santa Monica Beach and shot the cover. The album was recorded by Al Schmitt at Sunset Sound in Hollywood.”

On The Beach reached No 16 on the US Billboard album chart and No 13 in Young’s native Canada. Though it eventually sold half a million in the US alone, it was seen as a commercial let down following the staggering success of 1972’s Harvest. In time though, On The Beach became one of Young’s most revered albums, a doomy masterpiece that spoke of Young’s post-success burnout and a fragmented America.

The album’s cult status has grown over the decades, not least because it remained unavailable on CD until 2003, when a remastered version was finally released. It has since been re-released as Disc 2 of the 4CD box set Neil Young Original Release Series Discs 5-8.
