New Order Share Demo Version Of ‘State Of The Nation’
New Order have shared the Japanese demo of their hit single, State Of The Nation, which features among the extras in the definitive box set edition of their fourth album, Brotherhood, which is set for release through Warner Music on 22 November.
The official version of State Of The Nation was originally released as New Order’s twelfth single on 15 September 1986. Produced by New Order, it released No. 30 in the UK singles chart and also topped the UK indie chart. The demo version of the song was recorded at Japan’s Denon Studio in 1985 while New Order were on tour in the country. You can hear it below.

The new edition of Brotherhood comprises two CDs, two DVDs and an LP. It’s the fourth in the series of limited edition definitive boxsets which includes Movement (2019), Power, Corruption and Lies (2020) and Low-Life (2023).
The box set will include the original album remastered on CD and 180g LP, plus an Extras CD with previously unreleased demos and rarities, as well as two DVDs featuring the band’s performances at Festival of the Tenth at the GMex, Manchester 1986 and Live in Brixton, 1987 in support of World AIDS Day. The DVDs will additionally include live TV performances, interviews and rare band footage. The extensive hardback book will include contemporary articles and liner notes by Irish radio DJ Dave Fanning.
The box set will be released alongside 3 x 12″ singles from the time: Bizarre Love Triangle, State of the Nation and Touched by the Hand of God – also remastered and on 180g black vinyl.
During the summer of 2024, New Order played their first UK gig of the year with a huge homecoming show at Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park supported by Kyris, Nadine Shah, Roisin Murphy and Johnny Marr. There was also an extra surprise when There was also a special guest Marr launched into Smiths anthem How Soon is Now? as Billy Duffy, guitarist from The Cult, and fellow son of Wythenshawe, joined him. New Order had also been due to perform at Cardiff Bay but fans were left disappointed when the gig was cancelled due to safety concerns about the extreme weather.
