Teddy Swims has shared a new single, Funeral, taken from C24 – a new compilation mixtape from NME and Bose. Watch a live, one-take performance video of Funeral below.

“Funeral is fun, upbeat and it’ll make people want to dance, but there’s a layer of sadness underneath that,” Teddy Swims explained. “I love being able to make music that has joy but is heartbreaking at the same time.”

“We’re finally at the point where we’re honing a certain sound,” he continued. “It’s all about this old soul, Motown feel but modernising that in a way that feels authentic. Songs like Funeral just feel right.”

Funeral will feature on Bose x NME: C24, the latest in the ongoing C-Series of mixtapes, which will also include tracks from new artists Laufey, Artemas, Royel Otis, Lola Young, Samara Cyn and Tehya, who was hand-picked by the judges of C24’s new artist competition in association with social music creation platform BandLab.

The full mixtape will hit streaming platforms on 19 July, and can be pre-saved here. The digital release will be followed by a limited-edition physical release of cassette and vinyl.

Funeral is the first release from Teddy Swims since a deluxe edition of his hit debut album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) came out earlier this year. The singer recently told NME about the personal circumstances that led to him writing the tracks that ended up on the record, many of which were written in an intense five-day period. “I was in a bad situation with someone,” he revealed. “It was rough, we were living harder than we should have been, and I think my heart was trying to tell me I needed to get out of that,” remembers Swims. “I’m grateful I got to take something so traumatic and turn it into something positive.”
